A few days ago, I was reflecting on the typical traits of a good manager and what I believe is good leadership. I was thinking about my own personal experiences – both as an employee and a manager – and it actually seemed pretty simple to me: assuming that you hired the right people, it comes down to 2 things only:
Give people space…
Give the people you hire the space to express their full potential. It sounds like a no-brainer but how many managers are still micro-managing their employees and believe it will give great results. It’s a bit like buying a super-fast car and use it only in residential zones where the speed is limited to 30Km/h. Just set some boundaries by making sure they know when to ask for permission but make sure to set a space for freedom and creativity. Only this way, people will evolve at their full potential. Bonus: they will be happier, they will show more ownership and take more responsibilities.
…and let them inspire you
Together with giving people space, let them express their ideas. All of them, even the most stupid ones. Your team should know that any idea is good to hear but that not all will become “something”. And you should know that being the senior doesn’t make you all-knowledgeable. On the contrary, you should tell yourself that “you know nothing”, keep a fresh eye and let yourself “be improved” every day by all the great things other people can bring you.
If you succeed in implementing a culture of ideation in your team you will soon see that even impractical ideas can lead to a conversation – they will actually be the fuel of your conversations – and it will open the door to great realisations. Yep, we’re stronger together. And just like giving space, this will increase happiness, efficiency, and ownership.
